Emily Kam '22 is an Information Science Major/Creative Writing Minor and a member of the Milstein Program’s first graduating senior cohort.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I will be working as a UX Designer at Epic Systems. In the future, I want to hopefully get an MFA in creative writing and do something with creative writing.
What was your favorite part about being in the Milstein Program?
I liked all of the opportunities that Milstein Presented to us, whether that was working on the projects or the seminars they had that exposed us to different ideas we never really think about. It really helped me round out my education, especially if normally you would just be taking info sci and CS classes. Milstein provided this opportunity to explore classes and ideas even beyond Arts and Sciences requirements.
What was your favorite memory about being in Milstein?
My favorite memory was when we were all at Cornell Tech this summer for the summer program, we were all hanging out watching Ex Machina. Another MIlsteiner and I had a very stimulating conversation about the themes surrounding the movie afterward, and I thought to myself, “This is the kind of conversation I wanted to have coming into Milstein.”
What did you get out of Milstein?
Milstein provided me with the idea of not being scared of following a different path. I don’t have to go to classes, get the internship, go to the job after the internship—listening to speakers talk about their unconventional career paths gave me the courage to pursue that.
What advice would you give your freshman self?
You don’t have to know what the future is to do stuff right now! I keep worrying about what my major will be, what my job will be, instead of focusing on what is going on right now. You can’t be where you will be 30 years from now!
